The Minister of Education, Training, Employment, Youth, Sports and Culture the Honorable Alden McLaughlin officially opened the main pavilion at the Jimmy Powell Oval on Sunday. In writing another chapter in the history of the Cayman Islands cricket, the Minister highly praised Jimmy Powell for his immense contributions towards cricket development. Words like “living legend” and “icon of cricket” were frequently used by both the Minister and Courtney Myles CICA President during their contributions. The Minister expressed his happiness on the development of cricket in particular reference to the twenty teams (17 men & 3 women) in local cricket creating a record in 2009. He indicated in addition to this facility other proper cricket grounds are being developed at the new high schools.

The day began under brilliant sunshine only for the heavens to open up and shower blessings on this auspicious occasion. Among the many activities were a women’s match, a veterans’ match and some fun races. A large crowd, including members of the Powell family and friends, supporters, local and national cricketers had an enjoyable day watching the women, the association’s newest addition of its program and the veterans or trailblazers display their talents.

It was interesting to see Mr. Powell bowling the first over to the Minister. Having not played for awhile, the Minister drew on his experience to comfortably stroke the ball a couple of times through the covers before the Grandmaster produced the “Dosra” and bowled him. Joining the celebrations were Ministry of Education officials, the Director of Sports Mr. Dalton Watler, Government Minister Arden McLean and the Leader of Government Business the Honorable Kurt Tibbetts who umpired for five overs in the Veterans’ match!
