While many cricket fanatics were loud in praise of the contributions of the West Indies players in the just concluded Indian Premier League, Cayman Islands cricketers were out enjoying the sun and providing excellent results.

SOL CUBS Runaway Champs in Div 2

SOL CUBS are the Division 2 League champions. They defeated Cayman Brac over the weekend by 5 wickets. Cayman Brac batted first and run into early trouble having loss 5 wickets for 84 runs. A solid 90 runs partnership between Chris Gayle 53 and Newton Lowe 24 gave Cayman Brac a reasonable total of 186 runs. Two half centuries from Gregory Smith 57 and Darren Cato 56 gave SOL CUBS a convincing victory.

Greenies Champions

It took the final round of matches to finally decide the Division 1 League winners for 2015. A solid partnership of 105 runs between national captain Chris Palmer 54n.o and centurion Chad Hauptfleisch 139 dominated the proceedings on Greenies clinical march towards championship honors. Final touches were applied by Alister Ifill who took 5 wickets. Greenies were 137 for 4 wickets before Captain Palmer joined Hauptfleisch and ensure that Greenies piled up the runs at an amazing rate finishing on

No one can ask for a better finish to the first cricket competition in 2015. It all boils down to a pressure weekend. Will Troy Taylor rally his By Rite troops to maintain their supremacy and champions for another year or will Greenies and Sol Tigers drive home to victory? With By Rite on a Bye, Greenies and Sol Tigers were victorious over Police and Prison last weekend to set up this exciting finish to the League season.

The return of Sacha De Alwis

National player Sacha De Alwis returned to local cricket after almost a year away and immediately stamped his class on proceedings. Warming up on Saturday representing his old Schools team, De Alwis made 85 runs against Chillies as the Schools team collected its first victory. Sunday was even better as De Alwis turned up in full force with an excellent all round performance. De Alwis picked up 6 wickets and scored 48 runs as Greenies walked over the Prisons team.

SOL Opens Up the League

SOL TIGERS defeated By Rite and opened up the race for championship honors. With 3 rounds of matches remaining, it is a 3 way battle between defending champions BY RITE, GREENIES AND SOL TIGERS. It was an intriguing contest at Smith Road Oval on Sunday where SOL Tigers produced an excellent all round performance to narrow the gap in the points tally. It was the weekend of the Cato family as Corey, Darren and Dad Wayne produced with bat and ball.

Local cricket returns to the parks following the Easter Holidays. The race is on for not only honors in this year’s leagues but to impress the national selectors. The national senior men team is scheduled to compete in the ICC World Cricket League Division 6 in September in Surrey, England. It is a keen competition for places in this longer version of instant cricket.
